Reality Therapy

Reality therapy is a cognitive behavioural approach to therapy based on the teachings of Choice Theory.  Choice Theory is a way of looking at human behaviour developed by the American Psychiatrist, Dr. William Glasser.  Choice Theory points out that as humans all we do is behave and almost all of our behaviour is chosen as we are driven to satisfy our basic human needs of Survival, Love and Belonging, Power, Freedom and Fun.  An important part of Choice Theory is the acknowledgement of all aspects of our behaviour - ‘Total Behaviour’ which sees behaviour as a combination of Action, Thinking, Feeling and Physiology and uses this information to deepen awareness of how our feelings and physical bodies are affected by our actions and our thinking.

The core of Reality Therapy is the idea that regardless of what has “happened” in our lives, or what we have done in the past, we can choose behaviours that will help us meet our needs more effectively in the future.  Although Reality Therapy can be used as a stand alone approach it is often used as part of an integrative approach by the Therapist who will use it as a learning intervention to enable clients to self-evaluate and bring about a deeper awareness and understanding of themselves.
